August 2018

Dear Holdrum Families,

On behalf of our assistant principal, Mr. Jasper and our teachers I would like to welcome you back to Holdrum Middle School for the 2018-19 school year.

Seventh and eighth grade students, because you have experience at Holdrum Middle School, we will hold you to a higher standard this year. You know the routines, rules and expectations; this will allow you to serve as role models for this year’s sixth graders. Don’t hesitate to lend a hand helping a new student, whether it’s giving directions to a classroom, assisting with a locker or just being a friendly face in the hallway. I know you will meet these expectations admirably.

Thursday, September 6, 2018 is the first day of the school year. You should arrive at school no later than 7:50 a.m. Upon arrival, please report directly to your advisory class, which is found within the summer mailing you received. This mailing will also contain your locker and the room it is located in.

This year promises to be an exciting one for all Holdrum students. We continue to emphasize the skills necessary to succeed in a rapidly changing, interconnecting world as identified by A Portrait of a Graduate. We will continue to expand this skill set with a focus on students’ ability to think critically and creatively for the 2018-2019 school year. Our teaching staff continues to develop innovative experience and meaningful learning opportunities.

Additionally, our mathematics department prepares to implement the first year of a new regional K-8 mathematics curriculum. This curriculum was developed over the past two years with our regional partners and the Pascack Valley Regional High School District. This curriculum supports the premise that every student can be successful at math through real world connections, conducting meaningful conversations and solving complex problems and rigorous tasks.

As part of the ongoing emphasis on technology, every Holdrum student will be receiving a Chromebook to use in school and at home. These Chromebooks are scheduled to be distributed the first few days of school provided that the required forms are completed and laptop care quiz is passed. Our school will continue to utilize Canvas, our student learning management system where students and parents will have access to information for all their classes in one easily accessible location.

In addition, seventh grade students will be enrolled in new specialized electives based on their preferences.  Our students will have access to upgrades to our state of the art Media Center, and will be taking part in the piloting of the HMS Academies program. We are looking forward to sharing these educational opportunities with you, to further ensure your success at Holdrum, in high school and beyond.

It is my hope, that Holdrum Middle School will provide opportunities for you to become a compassionate citizen, fearless trailblazer, global communicator, collaborative innovator, a problem seeker and solution maker for the 2018-2019 school year. If you resolve to make this your best year ever, you will also help to make the Holdrum community the best place it can be.

I look forward to seeing you on September 6, 2018.

Yours in Education,

James P. Cody

Principal
